RINGING UPDATE
RINGING AT WOOLSTON DURING 2002
During the year, Ringing at the Eyes was restricted to No 1 and No3 beds. Nevertheless, a fine effort by our team of Ringers resulted in a record for the Reserve of 6251 birds newly -ringed.
Highlights included 6 Sparrowhawks mist-netted, and an adult Hobby caught in June, the first ever by Merseyside Ringing Group. The amount of winter feed provided attracted a record total of 19 Great Spotted Woodpeckers.
A record no of Wrens (333) were netted during the year. The changing Dunnock: Robin ratio (144:261) probably reflects the transition from scrub to more mature woodland that the Reserve is undergoing. Ringing totals for Greenfinch and Chaffinch were the highest ever.
With regard to the warbler family, it was a year of mixed fortunes. Record numbers of Reed Warblers (450) and 409 Blackcap being double the average total for the previous 12 years, compared with a significant decline in Grasshopper Warbler and Garden Warbler numbers. Figures for Sedge Warbler, Whitethroat and Lesser White throat approached the norm. For the first time Chiffchaff figures exceeded those of Willow Warbler. Local factors (e.g. a decline in insect bearing scrubland ) may well be the most important factor involved.
